Kenneth A. Kesselring Site

Kenneth A. Kesselring Site: 1957, West Milton, Saratoga County. One of two Navy Training Sites for Nuclear Reactor Operators. Kesselring once had four operating reactors, but two older reactors were decommisioned in the 1990s leaving two reactors in operation. About 800 sailors are trained at Kesselring annualy, down from about 2,000 at the height of the 1980s build-up. About 500 Naval personnel and 400 civilians also work at the site in training or support roles. Kesselring is operated for the Navy by The Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL) located in Schenectady. KAPL is engaged solely in research and development for the design and operation of naval nuclear propulsion plants. Activities relating to naval nuclear propulsion systems are performed in accordance with the requirements and authority of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, a joint DOE and U.S. Department of Navy program responsible for all activities relating to naval nuclear propulsion. The Kesselring site is also used to provide full-scale testing of propulsion plant prototype hardware and to train personnel to operate these plants.

Gypsy

From high atop Landen Belgium, it's time one again for the Stranger Show...

A group of gypsies has been driven out of a Belgian town after the mayor hired a DJ to blast rock music at them.

The Roma had amassed 30 caravans at a site in Landen, a small town with a population of less than 15,000, around 30 miles east of Brussels, with no plans to leave.

But after a DJ played Dire Straits at a volume of 95 decibels - equivalent to the sound of a pneumatic drill from 50 feet away - they caved in and agreed to go.

The gypsies had initially agreed with a landowner to park 14 caravans at the site in Flemish Brabant province until Tuesday, according to Landen mayor Gino Debroux.

But since arriving on Sunday, they had reportedly amassed a further 16 vehicles.

'Since then, they've said they won't leave and they're there with 30 caravans,' Mr Debroux told Reuters via phone earlier this week.

'This is an industrial site and is not designed for camping.'

Mr Debroux said the group's refusal to leave had prompted him to hire a DJ to blast music at them from 9am yesterday.

'This is a way of putting pressure on them. It was very difficult to negotiate with the gypsy king, as he called himself,' he said. 'It's a non-violent method to ask them to come to an agreement.'

The DJ kicked off his set with Dire Straits' 'Sultans of Swing', before continuing to play music at 95 decibels until shortly after midday, according to local media.

Belgian television showed Roma children dancing to the music.
I want to thank the mayor,' said one camp resident. 'It's very nice that he sent a DJ for us to have a party.'

 By midday, however, the Roma had agreed with police that they would leave the site. They are expected to depart at some point today.

The drastic measure has sparked a range of reactions of social media, including some from fellow members of Mr Debroux's socialist Sp.a party.

'Not OK, what happened in Landen. Really not OK,' said former minister Freya Van den Bossche.

Oak Orchard Creek Swamp NY

From high atop the Oak Orchard Creek Swamp NY aka the Iroquois National Wildlife refuge,  we bring you the Stranger Show. Today we continue our series featuring the less well-known towns of the United States. Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge is a namesake of the Iroquois Indians, a Native American federation that resided in the north east. The federation was originally made up of five tribes: Cayuga, Oneida, Mohawk, Seneca and Onondaga. The Tuscarora entered the federation in the 1800's.
At the end of the last glacial period, a huge lake called Tonawanda covered much of Western New York. Through the slow passage of time the lake drained and filled until only a few swampy areas remained. Here, wildlife flourished in the diverse habitat.
Centuries later, the Seneca Indians began to drain the swamp and clear some of the forests for farming. To the first European settlers in the early 19th century the remaining clusters of oak trees were reminiscent of an orchard and so they named the area "Oak Orchard Swamp." Settlers expanded artificial drainage of the swamp to improve logging and farming operations, but, plagued by high costs, and a cycle of muck fires and floods, the outcome was marginal at best. By the 1950s, landowners were looking to develop further and convert the lands to other uses. This development would have resulted in the loss of these vital wetlands forever.
On May 19, 1958 the federal government established the Oak Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, using funds from the sale of Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamps, or "Duck Stamps". To avoid confusion with the neighboring Oak Orchard State Wildlife Management Area, the refuge was renamed Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in 1964.

Today we continue our series featuring the less well-known towns of the United States.Why, Arizona is located at the intersection of  highways 85 and 86. The unusual name comes from the fact that at one time, two major highways (Highway 85 and Highway 86) intersected in a Y. The spot became known as "The Y," and the spelling was changed when residents petitioned for a post office. At the time of the town's naming, Arizona law required town and city names to have at least three letters, so the town founders decided to name it Why because they could not just call it Y. Eventually, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) changed the intersection to more of a T-shape because of safety concerns, thus the name is part of the town's history more than its current state of affairs. Today we ask the musical question: Why another album from this group?
